About New River Gorge National Park
New River Gorge National Park and Preserve protects 53 miles of the New River, paradoxically one of the oldest rivers in the world despite its name. The river has carved a spectacular gorge through the Appalachian Mountains, now famous for world-class whitewater rafting and rock climbing. The iconic New River Gorge Bridge, the third-longest single-arch steel span in the world, is celebrated each October during Bridge Day when BASE jumpers leap from its deck.
