About Congaree National Park
Congaree National Park protects 26,000 acres of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest—the largest remaining in North America. The park's champion trees include some of the tallest in the eastern United States. The forest floods regularly, nourishing the ecosystem and creating a watery wilderness best explored by canoe or kayak. In late May, synchronous fireflies put on a spectacular display, blinking in unison throughout the forest.
