About Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake National Park protects the caldera left by the eruption and collapse of Mount Mazama about 7,700 years ago. The lake is 1,943 feet deep, making it the deepest in the United States and one of the deepest in the world. With no inlets or outlets, the lake is filled entirely by snow and rain, giving it extraordinary clarity and an intense blue color. Wizard Island rises 755 feet from the lake's surface, a cinder cone that formed after the caldera collapse.
