About Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Theodore Roosevelt National Park honors the 26th President and the North Dakota badlands that helped shape his conservation legacy. After losing his wife and mother on the same day in 1884, Roosevelt retreated to his ranch in the badlands, where he found healing in the wild landscape. Today, the park protects 70,000 acres of colorful badlands, mixed-grass prairie, and the Little Missouri River. Bison, elk, wild horses, and prairie dogs roam freely across this dramatic terrain.
