About Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave National Park protects the world's longest known cave system, with more than 400 miles of surveyed passageways—and more being discovered regularly. The cave formed over millions of years as slightly acidic groundwater dissolved the limestone bedrock. Above ground, the park protects a lush hardwood forest and the scenic Green River. The cave has been used by humans for over 5,000 years and contains significant archaeological resources.
