About Grand Canyon National Park
Grand Canyon National Park encompasses one of the most spectacular examples of erosion anywhere on Earth. The canyon stretches 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and more than a mile deep. The layered bands of colorful rock reveal millions of years of geological history. President Theodore Roosevelt, who championed its protection, called it 'the one great sight every American should see.' The Colorado River continues to carve the canyon deeper, exposing rock dating back 1.8 billion years at its lowest points.
