About Kobuk Valley National Park
Kobuk Valley National Park protects 1.75 million acres of Arctic wilderness above the Arctic Circle, centered on the Kobuk River and the surreal Great Kobuk Sand Dunes. These 25-square-mile dunes are remnants of the last ice age. Twice yearly, the Western Arctic Caribou Herd—500,000 strong—migrates through the park as it has for thousands of years. With no roads, trails, or facilities, Kobuk Valley is one of the least visited national parks, receiving fewer visitors in a year than some parks see in a day.
