About Katmai National Park

Katmai National Park protects 4 million acres of volcanic landscapes, wild rivers, and the world's largest concentration of brown bears. Each summer at Brooks Falls, up to 100 bears gather to feast on spawning sockeye salmon, creating one of the world's premier wildlife viewing experiences. The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, formed by the 1912 Novarupta eruption (the largest of the 20th century), remains a stark volcanic landscape. The park is accessible only by floatplane.
